Celebrating Black History Month through culture, inclusion and opportunity

At Manor Wood School, some of the most powerful learning experiences happen when culture, community and the curriculum come together.
This Black History Month, Kyle brought a wonderful taste of Caribbean culture into school by preparing a fantastic Caribbean community lunch for pupils and staff. The kitchen was alive with activity as he shared his passion for food and helped create a memorable experience that celebrated heritage, inclusion and the joy of coming together around the table.
Pupils took an interest in the process from beginning to end — from purchasing ingredients and exploring the items needed, to watching the food being prepared and cooked and helping to lay the tables. More than just a meal, it was a practical learning experience that encouraged curiosity, participation and a sense of shared achievement.
The event offered a meaningful opportunity to recognise Caribbean heritage as part of Black History Month and to celebrate the diversity of our school community. Food can bring people together, encourage conversation and create connections. Sharing this experience helped reinforce the importance of respecting different backgrounds, valuing one another and recognising the contributions each person brings to our community.
The lunch also supported careers education, life skills and business enterprise. Pupils could see how an idea becomes a successful event, while gaining insight into planning, budgeting, purchasing, organisation, food preparation, presentation and teamwork. These transferable skills connect to future opportunities in catering, hospitality, entrepreneurship and many other career pathways.
PARENT FEEDBACK “Just feeding back that Leon was VERY appreciative that you cooked such a feast for lunch today I’ve heard all about it and grateful he’s come home so full up ” “Well chuffed! Have a great weekend.”
Feedback like this reminds us that the impact of a school experience extends beyond the school gates. Leon’s enthusiasm captures what we want for our pupils: positive experiences they remember, talk about at home and feel proud to have been part of.
A huge thank you to Kyle for his enthusiasm, generosity and hard work. His contribution showed how staff can share their skills, celebrate their heritage and inspire pupils through authentic, practical experiences.
At Manor Wood, inclusion is not simply something we talk about — it is something we live, share and celebrate together.
