Home News & Events All Things Active – Build a Bike
At Manor Wood School, we’re always looking for opportunities to help our children build confidence, resilience and independence through meaningful, real-world experiences. Our recent All Things Active – Build a Bike project gave children the chance to do exactly that, working alongside the manager and facilitator of the Build a Bike initiative to build a bicycle from scratch.
Starting with just a frame and a collection of parts, the children worked through each stage of the build, learning how the different components fit together and developing practical mechanical skills along the way. From handling tools and fitting smaller components to lifting, positioning and stabilising larger parts, the activity provided plenty of opportunities to develop both fine and gross motor skills, coordination and hand-eye coordination.
The project was also a fantastic opportunity for children to develop their teamwork and communication skills. They listened to instructions, shared ideas, solved problems together and supported one another when they encountered challenges. It was wonderful to see children encouraging their peers and celebrating each other’s achievements.
Building a bike also required patience, concentration and perseverance. When things didn’t go to plan, the children had to think about what to try next and keep working towards their goal. Completing the project gave them a tangible sense of achievement and helped reinforce the message that challenges can be overcome with determination and support.
For our SEMH learners, practical activities like this can also provide valuable opportunities to develop emotional regulation, self-esteem and a sense of belonging. The project reflected our SAFE LEARN principles of Connect, Co-Reflect and Co-Regulate, as children worked alongside adults and peers, supported one another and reflected on challenges together.
Most importantly, the children had fun and could see the results of their hard work. Finishing the bikes gave them something tangible to be proud of and a lasting reminder of what they can achieve through teamwork, perseverance and determination.
We’re incredibly proud of all the children who took part and would like to thank All Things Active for providing such a memorable and rewarding experience.
“I learnt how to build a bike, oh and teamwork.”
